We’ve been buzzing about Mr Robs Honey since we partnered with Steven Robinson (the apiarists) on the Saxon Court green roof live lab back in 2021. We were thrilled that Steven brought his small apiary of Buckfast Bees up to the live lab and that they kindly produced some raw honey for our visitors to try.
As a project, we were also able to talk to our visitors about other types of bees that are in decline and highlight the benefits of creating habitats for ground-nesting bees such as Solitary Bees and Mason Bees on rooftop spaces.
In December 2021, the meanwhile project at Saxon Court came to an end and Steven and his 200,000 bees decided to move with us to the rooftop of the YMCA Milton Keynes. We are happy to say that last year alongside growing and supplying vegetables on the roof garden we were also able to supply honey to HomeGround Café as part of their breakfast menu.
In November 2022, Steven did an excellent job of representing the Green Roof Project on Channel 5 News, showcasing the possibility of keeping bees on a roof and inspiring more local businesses to do the same. This paid off recently when the centre:mk decided to become home to several hives.
Steven has also delivered a beekeeping workshop from the YMCA – We will keep you posted if he has any more planned.
Thanks, Steven for bringing a sweet buzz to the project!
